Job Summary
This is a senior, hands-on architecture role responsible for defining the technical vision and architecture of Insulet's iOS mobile application, which serves as the patient-facing controller for a connected insulin delivery system. The role focuses on designing secure, reliable, and FDA-compliant mobile software that communicates with insulin pumps and CGMs through Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), manages therapy data, and synchronizes information to the cloud.
The architect partners closely with firmware, cloud, cybersecurity, quality, and regulatory teams to ensure the mobile platform is safe, scalable, and compliant. Responsibilities include setting iOS technical strategy, establishing engineering standards, mentoring senior engineers, driving BLE connectivity architecture, ensuring data integrity and security, and mitigating technical risks related to connectivity, battery life, performance, and patient safety.
Key focus areas: iOS architecture, BLE connectivity, medical device software, cloud integration, cybersecurity, FDA-regulated development, and technical leadership.

The Senior Principal iOS Architect defines the vision, architecture, and engineering strategy for the iOS mobile app in an FDA-regulated insulin delivery system. The mobile app is the patient-facing controller in an IoT-style system: it discovers and maintains a secure Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connection to the pump, issues therapy commands, receives pump and continuous glucose monitor (CGM) data, and securely synchronizes that data to the cloud.
This is a hands-on individual-contributor architecture role. You will set the long-term technical direction, establish the standards other iOS engineers build to, mentor senior engineers, and stay close enough to the code to make the hard design decisions yourself. You will partner with firmware, cloud, quality, cybersecurity, and regulatory colleagues so the mobile architecture supports a safe, reliable, and maintainable medical device.
This is a hybrid role, with 1–2 days per week in the office.
Responsibilities:
- Define and evolve the iOS architecture for pump control, CGM and pump data capture, local persistence, and cloud upload, including how the app behaves across connection loss, background execution, and app lifecycle events.
- Own the BLE strategy for the mobile app: connection models, pairing and bonding, reconnection, command and data reliability, and how the app coexists with pump firmware constraints.
- Set the technical vision for the iOS platform and translate it into roadmaps, architecture decision records, interface contracts, and implementation standards.
- Design for a regulated medical device: traceable requirements, risk controls, verification and validation, and a software lifecycle that supports FDA design controls.
- Establish security and privacy architecture for therapy commands and protected health information in transit and at rest, aligned with HIPAA, FDA cybersecurity expectations, and healthcare privacy obligations.
- Define data integrity rules for glucose, insulin delivery, and device-state data from capture on the phone through upload and reconciliation in the cloud.
- Review designs and critical code paths, and mentor senior engineers so architectural intent survives implementation.
- Partner with firmware, cloud, quality, human factors, and regulatory teams on interface contracts, hazard mitigations, and submission-ready technical evidence.
- Evaluate cross-platform options for shared non-UI logic, such as Flutter or Kotlin Multiplatform, while keeping the therapy user interface native iOS.
- Identify technical risk early and drive mitigation for connectivity, battery, latency, data loss, and upgrade compatibility.
Basic Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering.
- At least 10 years of professional software engineering experience, with substantial recent work architecting and shipping production iOS mobile apps.
- Deep experience with Swift and Apple platform APIs, including application lifecycle, background execution, networking, and local storage.
- Demonstrated Bluetooth Low Energy experience on iOS using Core Bluetooth, including connection management, pairing, and reliable command and notification handling.
- Experience defining architecture for a connected system in which a mobile app is a controller or gateway for a physical device and a cloud backend.
- Working knowledge of HIPAA and how it applies to collection, storage, and transmission of protected health information from a mobile medical app.
- Experience operating inside a regulated quality system, such as medical device, aerospace, or another design-control environment, including requirements traceability and verification.
- Ability to write and defend architecture decisions that balance safety, security, reliability, and delivery speed.
- Clear written and verbal communication with engineers and with quality, regulatory, and clinical partners.
