From the employer's posting

At Bristol Myers Squibb, our employees often ask, “Who are you working for?”—a question that fuels collaboration, accountability, and urgency in our work. Our purpose-driven culture inspires us to discover, develop, and deliver innovative medicines to prevail over serious diseases. We offer uniquely interesting and meaningful work, opportunities for growth, and a supportive environment that values inclusion, wellbeing, flexibility, and comprehensive benefits. This is work that transforms the lives of patients, and the careers of those who do it.

Position Summary

Chemical Process Development (CPD) is a team of organic chemists, analytical chemists, and chemical engineers working together to design novel syntheses from raw materials to supply new medicines to patients. CPD scientists focus on developing safe, economical, sustainable, and robust small-molecule processes to support clinical trials and the launch of new medicines. We are seeking a highly-motivated candidate to join our analytical team in advancing CPD’s analytical capabilities. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing and optimizing the performance of analytical techniques including liquid chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Summer interns will work with mentors for ~10 weeks on a guided research project within a PD Project Team. The program is organized to ensure that interns gain valuable industry and functional experience, work on challenging assignments, learn about BMS and meet diverse company representatives.

The program will feature:

  • An orientation, including an overview of company structure, products and brands
  • An introduction to the GPS and PD organizations
  • Exposure to senior management and business leaders
  • Formal presentation at the end of your internship
  • A mentorship program

Program Dates: June 7 – August 13, 2027. Applications are currently being accepted and candidates may be selected on a rolling basis. Those selected will be notified according to the 2027 internship program timeline. Position is in New Brunswick, NJ.

Key Responsibilities

This position integrates wet- and dry-lab functions, where the selected candidate will be responsible for design and execution of experiments to evaluate the performance of LC and NMR instrumentation, as well as the development of data analysis techniques to facilitate generation of chemical insights.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to interrogate representative small-molecule chemical reactions from the portfolio, including non-isolated intermediates and process-related impurities.

Analyze and interpret chromatographic and spectroscopic data to provide insight into system suitability and performance limits.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled in an accredited university program seeking a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Science, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Chemistry, Chemical or Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Candidates are expected to graduate between Fall 2027 and 2028.
  • All candidates must be authorized to work in the US both at the time of hire and for the duration of their employment.
  • Hands-on experience with LC (HPLC/UPLC) is required; experience with automated or online sampling systems and instrument integration is a plus.
  • Experience with NMR techniques, particularly the acquisition and interpretation of small-molecule NMR data, is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated skills in problem-solving, instrument troubleshooting, and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Must include GPA on resume for consideration (program requires GPA of 3.0 or greater).

We hire for skills and capabilities, not just credentials – if this role excites you, but doesn’t perfectly match your resume, we encourage you to apply anyway.
