Job Description

Summary

The Software Technology Solutions Division (STS) is seeking a hands-on Staff Software Engineer to design, build, and support scalable software solutions that integrate electronic health record (EHR) systems with cloud-based applications.

This role requires an experienced technical leader who can work across the full software stack, architect distributed systems, and help guide engineering teams through design, development, deployment, and production support. The Staff Software Engineer will play a key role in ensuring application performance, scalability, reliability, and code quality while collaborating across engineering, product, and other technical teams.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical leader with deep software engineering experience in healthcare technology, cloud-native development, and healthcare interoperability. They combine strong architecture and coding capabilities with the ability to lead and influence other engineers. Experience building production systems using AWS, Java, React, JavaScript, RESTful APIs, and HL7/FHIR will be particularly valuable, along with a strong focus on scalability, reliability, performance, and customer experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in all phases of the Agile software development lifecycle, including architecture, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
  • Architect and guide the development of end-to-end distributed systems optimized for performance, scalability, reliability, and availability.
  • Design, develop, and maintain applications and services using technologies including Go, Java, React, and JavaScript.
  • Design and integrate RESTful APIs and services supporting healthcare and cloud-based applications.
  • Develop and support healthcare interoperability solutions utilizing HL7 and FHIR standards.
  • Design and implement scalable cloud-based services and workflows using AWS and related cloud technologies.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership while planning and guiding engineering teams through feature development and delivery.
  • Partner across engineering and product teams to guide the creation, integration, and consumption of software services.
  • Apply a customer-centric approach to architecture and software design, balancing user experience, product strategy, technical requirements, and engineering tradeoffs.
  • Maintain high standards for application architecture, code quality, documentation, testing, debugging, and optimization.
  • Support production applications with a focus on uptime, operational stability, performance, and continuous improvement.
  • Communicate technical concepts and architectural decisions clearly across engineering teams and stakeholders.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 7+ years of software engineering experience, including experience building large-scale software applications within the healthcare field.
  • 2+ years of experience deploying, running, and supporting production systems in a public cloud environment, such as AWS.
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership to engineers, including planning and executing software deliverables.
  • Experience designing and building cloud-based services using AWS.
  • Experience with cloud PaaS persistence technologies, cloud-based services, and orchestration/workflow technologies such as AWS Step Functions or Apache Airflow.
  • Professional software development experience using Java, React, and JavaScript.
  • Experience designing and integrating RESTful APIs.
  • Experience with healthcare interoperability standards, particularly HL7 and FHIR.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering and coding best practices, including maintainable and well-documented code.
  • Experience with unit and integration testing.
  • Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and software optimization skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience developing production software using Go.
  • Advanced experience designing distributed, cloud-native systems for scalability, reliability, and performance.
  • Experience working with multiple AWS services and cloud orchestration/workflow technologies.
  • Knowledge of regulatory, privacy, security, and data-protection requirements relevant to software environments, including HIPAA, SOX, PCI, and data protection requirements.
