The Opportunity:

The Senior Director, Technical Accounting is a senior finance leader responsible for complex and judgmental accounting matters across McKesson Medical-Surgical (MMS), with a primary focus on technical accounting, accounting policy, and transaction support. This role serves as the company’s subject matter expert on US GAAP for areas such as equity compensation, debt, leases, business combinations, impairments, and other non-routine or highly technical transactions.

This leader will own the accounting policy function, including the development, interpretation, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of company accounting policies. The role will also provide technical leadership for M&A activities, annual and interim impairment assessments, and other matters requiring significant judgment and documentation. Initially, the Senior Director will play a critical role in MMS / NewCo transition activities, including public company readiness in advance of a future separation from McKesson.

The Senior Director will lead a team of technical accounting professionals and partner closely with Corporate Accounting, Financial Reporting, FP&A, Treasury, Legal, Tax, Corporate Development, Internal Audit, and external auditors.

Essential Responsibilities:

Technical Accounting & Policy Leadership

  • Serve as the primary technical accounting authority for MMS, providing guidance on complex, non-routine, and judgmental accounting matters in accordance with US GAAP.
  • Lead the accounting policy function, including drafting, updating, and maintaining formal accounting policies, position papers, and application guidance.
  • Monitor new and emerging accounting standards, assess applicability and impact, and lead implementation efforts across affected areas of the organization.
  • Provide technical accounting support for areas including, but not limited to, equity compensation, debt and financing arrangements, leasing, revenue-related complexities, and restructuring activities.

M&A, Transactions & Strategic Initiatives

  • Lead technical accounting evaluations for mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and other strategic transactions, including due diligence, purchase accounting, and integration support.
  • Partner with Corporate Development, Legal, Tax, and FP&A to assess accounting implications of deal structures, contractual terms, and valuation inputs.
  • Provide accounting guidance for new business models, strategic initiatives, and complex commercial arrangements.

Impairments & Complex Estimates

  • Own and oversee the annual and interim impairment assessment processes, including goodwill, intangible assets, long-lived assets, and other complex valuation-driven estimates.
  • Review assumptions, methodologies, and conclusions developed by management or third-party specialists to ensure compliance with US GAAP and internal policy.
  • Prepare and review clear, defensible documentation to support management conclusions and external audit requirements.

Governance, Controls & Audit Support

  • Ensure strong governance, controls, and documentation exist for all technical accounting areas within scope.
  • Support SOX compliance by ensuring technical accounting conclusions are appropriately controlled, reviewed, and evidenced.
  • Serve as a key liaison with external auditors on complex accounting matters, proactively resolving issues and ensuring transparent communication.
  • Support the Controller and Assistant Controller in developing materials for and addressing Audit Committee or executive-level questions related to technical accounting matters.

Leadership & Talent Development

  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing technical accounting team; establish clear expectations, provide regular feedback, and support professional development.
  • Foster a culture of strong judgment, accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.
  • Build scalable processes, templates, and knowledge-sharing practices to support future growth as a standalone public company.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree or equivalent experience. Typically requires 13+ years of professional experience and 6+ years of diversified leadership, planning, communication, organization, and people motivation skills (or equivalent experience).
