About the Role
Alexion is seeking an experienced and strategic Director, Commercial & Medical Sourcing to lead a high-performing team supporting our US Commercial and Medical organizations.
In this role, you will serve as a trusted partner to senior business leaders, helping Commercial and Medical teams maximize value from suppliers while advancing AstraZeneca’s global enterprise strategies. You will lead global strategic sourcing initiatives from opportunity identification through delivery, balancing business priorities, supplier value, risk, compliance, and operational excellence.
A Hands-On Leadership Role
This is not a purely people-management position. In addition to leading and developing the team, you will be directly involved in strategic sourcing activities, stakeholder engagement, supplier negotiations, and complex business decisions. You will actively shape sourcing strategies, identify opportunities, remove barriers, and help deliver measurable outcomes.
The role will involve:
- Partnering directly with senior Commercial and Medical leaders
- Leading high-impact sourcing initiatives and supplier negotiations
- Coaching team members while remaining closely connected to day-to-day work
- Challenging existing processes and identifying opportunities for improvement
- Influencing stakeholders across functions and geographies
- Balancing immediate business needs with long-term enterprise value
You will shape and execute sourcing strategies across a broad range of categories, delivering value beyond cost savings through:
- Spend analytics and sourcing optimization
- Strategic sourcing and supplier selection
- Contract and supplier performance management
- Supplier risk management
- Supply chain and process transformation
Working closely with stakeholders across Commercial, Medical, Finance, IT, Compliance, Legal, HR, R&D, and global sourcing teams, you will identify opportunities, anticipate business needs, and continuously improve sourcing capabilities.
This is an opportunity to build strong partnerships with senior leaders, influence enterprise-wide strategy, and help transform sourcing from a locally driven function into a globally connected center of excellence. The successful candidate will be a collaborative, commercially minded, and hands-on leader who thrives in a dynamic environment and is motivated by creating sustainable value for both the business and the enterprise.
Accountabilities:
- Develop and execute clear category management, strategic sourcing, and procurement strategies in support of Alexion’s Commercial & Medical organizations.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure effective alignment that support business requirements while appropriately managing quality, speed, cost, risk and ease-of-use.
- Be knowledgeable in market trends, benchmarks, and best practices across categories under management. Use this knowledge to optimize results and drive a high standard of excellence.
- Lead sourcing events, initiate and negotiate contracts commercial terms and cost.
- Partner with suppliers and internal stakeholders to identify, manage, escalate, and resolve issues related to supplier performance.
- Develop and foster a supplier experience that nurtures the perception of Alexion as a “customer of choice.”
- Perform contract compliance reviews to determine compliance and contractual obligations
- Assist with budget/forecasting needs, such as accruals, project budgets, etc.
